BOOM, BOOM, BOOM! The first rooster of the season flew away unharmed. Since I wasn’t the one doing the shooting I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the season. We made sure to let the unnamed shooter hear about it too.
For the past 6 years I have been fortunate enough to hunt with my wife’s family on their land near Presho, SD. It is 360 acres of bird heaven! They provide the birds with the best food and cover year after year and the results have shown it. It is truly a “wild” bird hunters dream.
I must say I started a little slow this year firing off five shots at three birds and nothing to show for it. I like to tell my father-in-law those birds were too young to take home anyway. Haha.
I did redeem myself a little as I killed four of the next five wiley roosters that flew my way. We managed to get our 60 birds in a little less than 2 hours and three total walks.
Are bird numbers down? Maybe, but after seeing first hand the number of birds we kicked up, hunters have no reason to be worried about finding birds.
I like to remind everyone that the “numbers” put out this year are being compared to back to back record years. Trust me folks there is no shortage of pheasants throughout South Dakota.
Look forward to seeing everyone out in the fields.
